Career Fair at the Expo Center on January 24

Aspiring scientists, engineers and business professionals will enter a world of career possibilities when they meet with Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) recruiters at its Career Fair Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Candidates are encouraged to bring resumes and come prepared to talk with recruiters from NSWCDD at the event from

3-7 p.m. at the Fredericksburg Expo Center.

“Have you ever been curious about who Dahlgren is and what we do? This is your opportunity to come out and learn

about what we get to do each and every day – whether you are looking for a full-time position, college summer internship

or even a high school summer internship. There is something for everyone,” Brooke Bowler, NSWCDD recruiting lead, said.

NSWCDD has a broad and diverse research, development, test and evaluation portfolio, with an emphasis on warfare

systems development and integration. The division leads as Virginia’s largest federal research and development employer

with an annual budget of $1.9 billion.

Recruiters will be available from NSWCDD’s seven technical departments – Strategic and Computing Systems,

Electromagnetic and Sensor Systems, Integrated Engagement Systems, Weapons Control and Integration, Warfare

Analysis and Digital Modeling, Readiness and Training Systems and Integrated Combat Systems – as well as its Business

Operations Departments made up of Comptroller, Contracts and Human Resources. Human Resource Representatives will

be available to address NSWCDD’s benefits package and student opportunities.

“As a candidate, this event really allows you to learn and experience all that Dahlgren has to offer,” Bowler said.

Each department will have a recruiting team of at least five – one lead who keeps track of candidate names of interest to

the department, recruiters and interviewers. Candidates may have the opportunity to be interviewed in an interview

room and given an on-the-spot offer.

In June 2022, there was 175 candidates and recruiters made 27 on-the-spot job offers. Another 100 candidates registered

to have their information reviewed by hiring managers. Bowler said she would like to match or slightly exceed the number

of candidates this year. In addition to the Career Fair in 2022, there was a Human Resources Strategic Sourcing event of

which NSWCDD made 70 offers to candidates it met at recruiting fairs at 27 colleges and universities in the Fall.

Today, the following career opportunities lie in all fields of science and engineering: aerospace, combat systems,

computer, cyber, electrical, human factors, industrial systems, mechanical, modeling and simulation, network, optical,

radio frequency, software, system safety and systems engineering; artificial intelligence and machine learning; biology;

data science; game developer; material science; math; operations research; and physics.

Business operations opportunities include accounting, contract specialists, environmental/safety, facilities, financial

analysts, general business, human resources/labor employee relations/staffing/recruiting, logistics, procurement

specialist, project/program management, and property management.

In the technical field, NSWCDD is looking for engineering technicians and IT specialists.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens to apply and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Register today at

https://navsea.recsolu.com/app/collect/event/HCjX0qoWSeXskjvHJkm0Dw. Those who can’t attend the Career Fair can

upload their resumes which will be sent to management.

The Fredericksburg Expo Center is located at 2371 Carl D. Silver Parkway in Fredericksburg.

What would you or your Institution of Higher Education (IHE) do with up to $100,000?

Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division has designed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)

Innovation Challenge at Dahlgren with a prize purse of $100,000, which could be split by a percentage to team members

or to the IHE. The breakdown – 1st place is $50,000, 2nd place is $30,000 and 3rd place is $20,000.

How do you win? Develop AI and ML algorithms for the automated scheduling and coordination of simulated directed

energy, hypervelocity projectiles and other advanced weapon systems. The challenge is split into two phases – small

white paper and in-person event.

Gather a team of five members or less and submit a paper. Your entry must articulate why your team wants to

participate in the challenge and why the team believes they will develop an AI/ML algorithmic solution that will best

meet the objectives. The criteria are:

1. Describe the specific AI/ML experience of the team in algorithm design development and application. Examples of

previous developments and projects are strongly encouraged.

2. Describe the benefits of the team’s participation in the challenge and how each member plans to use this experience

in their future academic and/or career endeavors.

IHEs are encouraged to submit multiple teams. The deadline for the paper is Jan. 30, 2023. Evaluation of Phase 1

submissions is scheduled to take place Jan. 31, 2023 with an anticipated announcement of the winners Feb. 1, 2023. Up

to 25 teams will be selected to compete in person March 2-4, 2023 at the University of Mary Washington Dahlgren

Campus.

We talked about the Innovation Challenge with Dahlgren's Dr. George Foster, Distinguished Engineer for Combat Control.
