We get an extra hour of sleep this weekend. Spotsylvania Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Management Chief Jay Cullinan reminds everyone to change the batteries in your smoke detectors when you set your clocks back. If your smoke detector is more than 10 years old, replace it. The chief also says to test your smoke detector every month.

Other safety tips from Chief Cullinan:

  • Always sleep with your door closed.

  • Have a home escape plan and make sure everyone knows it.

  • In case of fire, get out and stay out—never go back inside.

Founder Charlie Russell with SAWs Virginia says they're facing an urgent need for a new location to store and build its pre-assembled wheelchair ramps, as the current building will soon be unavailable. The space is vital to the group’s mission, allowing volunteers to construct modular ramps that can be quickly installed at homes for people with mobility challenges.

So far this year, SAWs volunteers have built more than 40 ramps across the community, providing safe access and independence for those in need. Russell says more volunteers are always welcome, with opportunities available for all skill levels. Learn more or get involved at sawsva.org.

Florence Barnick and Jeanette Cadwallender talk about 180 years of the Fredericksburg City Cemetery on Washington Avenue. The deadline to nominate someone for Allen and Allen’s annual Hometown Hero program is this Friday night at midnight. Each year, the law firm recognizes individuals who make a difference through acts of kindness, leadership, and service to others.

David Williams with Allen and Allen says heroes often don’t seek recognition—they’re neighbors, teachers, volunteers, and community members who quietly make life better for those around them.

Nominations can be submitted online at allenandallen.com.
