Kathleen Daley-Becker and Von Young say timing and environment are everything when it comes to outdoor time. Pet owners are advised to walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening, avoiding midday heat when sidewalks and pavement can become hot enough to burn sensitive paw pads.
The Fredericksburg SPCA warns that heatstroke in pets can develop rapidly. Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and discolored gums. Without quick intervention, it can lead to collapse or death. And they have a zero tolerance message for leaving animals in vehicles--even briefly. fredspca.org
