Stephanie Benson with Columbia Gas of Virginia says now is the time for customers with natural gas service to prepare for the weekend storm. She says make sure furnace vents and gas meters are clear of snow and ice, and to know where gas shutoff valves are located. Benson also recommends checking carbon monoxide detectors, keeping extra batteries on hand, and having a plan in case power outages affect home heating systems.

Benson says taking a few simple steps now can help prevent dangerous situations and keep homes warm and safe during the storm.

Xander Hernandez and Karen Meadows highlight the life-changing impact service dogs have on veterans, offering independence, confidence, and critical emotional support. Their focus now is expanding the program by placing more highly trained dogs with veterans who need them.

A major need is for volunteer fosters, with flexible options ranging from daily care to weekends or holidays, making it accessible for many lifestyles. We talk about the need for community members to support the mission through financial donations or by contributing items from a wish list. More information on how to help is available at leashesofvalor.org.

Kalahari is on track to open in December in Spotsylvania, marking one of the largest private investments in the region’s history.

The project is expected to create 1,400 jobs and includes a 907-room hotel, a 150,000-square-foot convention center, a 175,000-square-foot indoor water park, and a 90,000-square-foot indoor adventure park. The resort will span 1.38 million square feet. Bill Freehling of the Fredericksburg Free Press writes that the complex is more than six times the size of the Central Park Walmart and roughly comparable to Mary Washington Hospital with two Walmarts added.

A centerpiece attraction will be the nation’s longest water coaster, and Kalahari has launched a contest inviting the public to help name the ride, with the winner earning the chance to be the first person to ride it. More information is available at kalahariresorts.com/virginia.
