(Richmond)- A new area code will make its way to Central Virginia next week. Starting Feb. 1, customers requesting new service or additional phone lines in the 804 area code region could be assigned the new 686 area code. The State Corporation Commission says the change wouldn’t happen until all 804 phone numbers run out this year. In 2022, the SCC approved the new area code for the central portion of Virginia including Richmond, Ashland, Charles City, Chesterfield, Henrico, New Kent, Petersburg and the Northern Neck.
