(Richmond)- Virginia Democrats hope to change the state constitution regarding marriage equality. One will go to the House, the other to the state Senate. Both proposed amendments to Virginia’s constitution would repeal the ban on same-sex marriage. Democrats say their legislation would also enshrine an affirmative right to marriage. The commonwealth passed a statute prohibiting same-sex marriage back in 1975. But same-sex marriage is allowed under federal law, which is why it’s legal in Virginia right now.
Democrats tried this in 2020, but it failed.
