General Assembly To Discuss Rules For Local Monument Control

(Richmond)- The General Assembly is giving local governments the choice to remove Confederate monuments. The State Senate passed the measure yesterday, with a set of rules in place for cities and counties to follow if they decide to remove or change a monument. The requirements include public hearings and a two-thirds final vote from the local government. Four of the five Confederate statues on Richmond’s Monument Avenue are on city property. The House of Delegates’ version of the bill didn’t include rules, so the chamber will take a look at the Senate’s proposal.
