(Richmond)- Officials in Virginia are saying the state will not legalize marijuana this year but could decriminalize it. Lawmakers will debate a proposal sent to the House of Delegates that is gaining support. As it stands, a person in possession of half an ounce faces up to 30 days in jail or a five-thousand dollar fine. The new bill would eliminate jail time and require offenders to pay a 25-dollar fine. Those in support of legalizing marijuana say it could still contribute to over incarceration if the offender can’t pay the penalty. Officials will revisit the legalization of marijuana in 2021.
