(Norfolk)- The Hampton Roads area affectionately known by it’s area code, “757,” is getting a new one. The State Corporation Commission announced the area code will be “948.” In 2019, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator filed the request for a new code after the region started running short on phone number combinations. The numbers were projected to run out by the end of 2021. Officials say the change will not affect the initiative in place by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce to brand the area, “The 757.” The 948 area code will be phased into the current 757 area. Existing numbers with the area code beginning in 757 will not be changed.
