(Newport News)- A Newport News police officer is dead following a traffic stop that happened last night. Authorities say it happened around 7 p.m. in the 14-hundred-block of 16th Street. An officer was conducting a traffic stop and when he approached the driver’s side door, the driver sped off and dragged the officer before the car crashed near Walnut Avenue. The driver was arrested and the officer was taken to the hospital where she later died from her injuries.
