Couples File Lawsuit After Being Required To Disclose Race For Marriage License

(Richmond)- Three couples in Virginia are suing the state after being required to identify their race on their marriage licenses.  The suit, filed Thursday, slams the statute as “offensive,” “unconstitutional,” and “reflective of a racist past.”  The paperwork also states the labeling is “scientifically baseless.”  All three couples were denied licenses after refusing to disclose their race.  Virginia is one of eight states that require couples to identify before they get married.
