(DC)- The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum has begun a seven-year renovation, and that means the historic X-15 rocket plane is tucked away in storage.  The X-15 is the fastest, highest-flying piloted airplane in history and has been displayed in the Air and Space Museum since the building opened in 1976.  The museum remains open during the renovations.  Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis and the Wright Brothers’ 1903 Flyer remain on display.
