State Considering New Area Code

(Richmond)- The 7-5-7 area code is running out of phone numbers in southeastern Virginia. The State Corporation Commission says there’s a proposal to add a new area code to the region, which would require residents to start dialing ten digits for local calls. The state created the 7-5-7 area code more than 20 years ago when numbers in the 8-0-4 area code started running low. The commission has scheduled four public hearings in August in the Hampton Roads area.
