(Richmond)- A trial is continuing today in a lawsuit challenging several Virginia abortion laws. The lawsuit brought on by several women’s health groups is looking to overturn a law that allows only doctors to perform first-trimester abortions. A federal judge recently rescinded a decision he made earlier this month that permitted nurse practitioners and physician assistants to carry out the abortions. Other issues to be argued in court include requirements for second-trimester abortions, whether patients should wait 24 hours after getting an ultrasound to undergo an abortion, and licensing standards for clinics.
