The Stafford Sheriff’s Office is investigating a case of fraud.   The victim told deputies she was contacted by an individual claiming to represent a charity based in Nevada. The individual told the victim she had been selected to receive a prize, which included a million dollars, a new car, and a new house. To claim the prize, the victim was instructed to pay a processing fee of $400 using gift cards. After purchasing the gift cards and providing the caller with the card information, the caller told her she’d need to purchase another $450 in gift cards in order to process her prize. She followed the caller’s instructions and again purchased gift cards in the requested amount and provided the card information. The victim realized she was involved in a scam after failing to receive her prize in the next few days. The incident remains under investigation.
