From Friends of the Rappahannock:

Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR), a local organization supporting river advocacy, education and restoration, has announced that Kathleen Harrigan is stepping down after five years of service. Daria Christian, FOR’s assistant executive director, will take over as interim executive director.
During Harrigan’s term, FOR expanded its education programs to reach over 10,000 students in a single school year and launched the headwater stream initiative which planted thousands of trees in the upper Rappahannock River watershed. It also tackled local environmental challenges, including the proposed development at Fones Cliffs and the prevention of fracking operations in multiple counties in the Northern Neck.
“Friends of the Rappahannock is a marvelous organization with an excellent staff that is doing important work benefitting the Rappahannock River Basin,” Harrigan said. “The organization is on the cusp of many important decisions and is poised for great things this year and for many years to come.”
“Kathy has given a tremendous amount of effort, time, and dedication to Friends of the Rappahannock,” said FOR Executive Committee President Chris Muldrow. “Her deep knowledge of issues affecting water quality and environmental threats to the watershed has really helped protect the Rappahannock that we all hold so dear.”
Christian has served as FOR’s education director for nine years, overseeing strong growth and effectiveness in its education programs. In recent years she has also served as assistant executive director.
“Daria has great operational knowledge of FOR and has a track record of building a great education program for the region,” Muldrow said. “She was a natural fit to take on this job.”
She will be working with Programs Manager Bryan Hofmann and Communications Coordinator JoEllen Santulli to refine the organization’s strategic plan and build out plans for growing the outreach, education, advocacy and restoration programs.
“We have an incredible staff who are really driven by a love for the river and a desire to share that love with the community,” Christian said. “It’s an honor to come to work with these guys every day.”
