VDOT HOT SPOTS IN THE FREDERICKSBURG DISTRICT

All work is scheduled weather permitting. Real-time information on work zones and lane closures is available on 511Virginia.

Interstate 95 (Exit 140/Courthouse Road)

Work is underway to improve the I-95 interchange at Exit 140 (Route 630/Courthouse Road). The project is building a diverging diamond interchange at Exit 140, relocating the Courthouse Road and Route 1 intersection to the south to align with Hospital Center Boulevard, and is widening Courthouse Road to four lanes from Cedar Lane to Ramoth Church Road.

Bridge beam lifts will stop I-95 traffic overnight each evening starting Tuesday, Sept. 4 through early Thursday, Sept. 6. Traffic will be stopped up to 30 minutes at a time for motorist safety. I-95 northbound travelers are encouraged to use Route 1 or Route 301 to avoid delays on these evenings.

I-95 Northbound
Tuesday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. Expect a single lane to close at 9 p.m. followed by double lane closures at 10 p.m. I-95 northbound traffic will be intermittently stopped overnight between midnight and 3 a.m. for up to 30 minutes at a time. Crews will lift bridge beams into place for new interstate overpasses at Courthouse Road. The northbound on-ramp will be closed during the traffic stops. All southbound lanes will remain open. All northbound lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m. the following morning.

Message boards on I-95 will provide advance notice of lane closures and detour routes. Traffic signals along these routes are timed to accommodate increased traffic volumes. Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control.
Route 630 (Courthouse Road)

Tuesday, noon – 2:30 p.m. and Wednesday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Courthouse Road will be reduced to one lane from Cedar Lane to Walpole Street for grading and pipe work.
Tuesday, noon – 2:30 p.m. and Wednesday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Courthouse Road between Austin Ridge Drive and Red Oak Drive for grading and pipe work.

Ramoth Church Road
Tuesday, noon – 2:30 p.m. and Wednesday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Ramoth Church Road from Courthouse Road to Dog Patch Lane to allow crews to install temporary concrete barriers. Flaggers will direct drivers in the work zone. Expect brief delays.

Snowbird Lane
Tuesday, noon – 2:30 p.m. and Wednesday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Snowbird Lane between Courthouse Road and the dead end to allow trucks to enter and exit the work zone for flagging to allow trucks to enter and exit the work zone.

Winding Creek Road
Tuesday, noon – 2:30 p.m. and Wednesday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Winding Creek Road from Courthouse Road to Embrey Mill Road for pipe work.

Woodcutters Road
Tuesday, noon – 2:30 p.m. and Wednesday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, single lane closures on Woodcutters Road between Courthouse Road and Cutstone Drive.

Wyche Road
Tuesday, noon – 2:30 p.m. and Wednesday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Wyche Road at Courthouse Road to allow trucks to enter and exit the work zone for grading and pipe work.

Interstate 95 Bridge Rehabilitation Project

Work is underway to improve the deck and substructure on several bridges located on I-95 in Stafford and Spotsylvania.

Stafford County: I-95 Bridge over Aquia Creek at mile marker 145
The I-95 bridges over Aquia Creek are located just north of Exit 143 (Route 610/Garrisonville) at mile marker 145.

I-95 Northbound:
Thursday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.
• 9 p.m. – single lane closed
• 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed
• 4:30 a.m. All lanes open the following morning
I-95 Southbound
Thursday – Friday
• 9 p.m. – single lane closed
• 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed
• Single lane remains closed until 7 a.m.
Stafford County: I-95 Bridge over Potomac Creek at mile marker 137
The I-95 bridges over Potomac Creek are located near Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) at mile marker 137. Drivers can expect lane closures at the following dates and times:

I-95 Northbound:
Tuesday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.
• 9 p.m. – single lane closed
• 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed
• 4:30 a.m. All lanes open the following morning
I-95 Southbound:
Tuesday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 7 a.m.
• 9 p.m. – single lane closed
• 10 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – two lanes closed
• 4:30 a.m. – 7 a.m. – single lane remains closed
• 7 a.m. – All lanes will reopen.
Interstate 95 Exit 130/Route 3/Fredericksburg Interchange Improvement Project

Construction is underway to modify the ramps and traffic pattern at the Interstate 95 and Route 3 interchange at Exit 130 in Fredericksburg to enhance safety. Motorists will encounter the following lane closures near Route 3, I-95 at Exit 130 and/or the Central Park shopping area.

I-95 Southbound Ramp to Route 3 Westbound
Tuesday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. The I-95 southbound ramp to Route 3 westbound at Exit 130 will be closed for paving and pavement markings. I-95 southbound traffic seeking to access Route 3 westbound will be detoured to I-95 Exit 130A to Route 3 eastbound, then directed to make a U-turn at Gateway Boulevard to Route 3 westbound.

Route 3 Eastbound
Tuesday – Friday, 9:30 p.m. – 4 a.m. Expect a single lane to close at 9:30 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 11 p.m. on Route 3 eastbound at the interchange to Carl D. Silver Parkway for milling and paving as part of the project. Motorists may experience a temporary rough driving surface and delays. All lanes will be open to traffic by 4 a.m. the following morning.

Route 3 Westbound
Tuesday – Friday, 9:30 p.m. – 9 a.m. Expect a single lane to close at 9:30 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 11 p.m. on Route 3 westbound at the interchange to Carl D. Silver Parkway for milling and paving as part of the project. Double lane closures on westbound Rt. 3 will end at 7 a.m., while a single lane will remain closed until 9 a.m. the following morning. Motorists may experience a temporary rough driving surface and delays.

Route 3 at Carl D. Silver Parkway (Central Park Main Entrance and Exit)
Tuesday – Friday, 10 p.m. – 7 a.m. Drivers will be limited to a right turn in and right turn out at Central Park’s main entrance and exit to allow crews to work safely in the median and at the intersection. Virginia State Police will be present at the intersection and assist with traffic control. Drivers are encouraged to use Central Park Boulevard, Trade Street or Commerce Street as an alternate route to access the shopping area.

Interstate 95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing Project

Construction is underway on a $132 million project to reduce driver delays by adding three new travel lanes to I-95 southbound in the Fredericksburg area. The project work zone begins just north of the Exit 133 interchange at Route 17 in Stafford County and ends just south of the Exit 130 interchange at Route 3 in the City of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County. Construction will be underway through May 2022.

Interstate 95 – Northbound and Southbound
Tuesday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. and Friday – Saturday, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Expect a single lane closure between mile marker 129, which is near Exit 130 (Route 3), and Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) to allow crews to install temporary concrete barriers along the left shoulder of I-95 northbound and southbound. All lanes will reopen by 4:30 a.m. on I-95 northbound and 10 a.m. on I-95 southbound.

Interstate 95 at Exit 118/Mudd Tavern Road Widening and Bridge Replacement Project

Crews are working to improve the interchange on Interstate 95 at Exit 118 (Mudd Tavern Road). The project is building a new I-95 overpass and will improve on and off-ramps on Mudd Tavern Road, Mudd Tavern Road east of I-95, and Mallard Road.

Mallard Road
Tuesday, 12 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., Wednesday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Mallard Road for project construction and storm sewer installation. Flaggers will direct drivers through the work zone.

Districtwide Line Striping Project

Tuesday, Noon – 5 p.m. and Wednesday – Saturday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Motorists should anticipate lane closures or alternating traffic with flagging operations on various routes throughout Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties this week. Crews are restriping existing line markings on various primary and secondary roads. Motorists should expect slow moving construction equipment and delays near the mobile work zone. Motorists are encouraged to avoid crossing over freshly painted lines. The paint will be wet and may adhere to vehicle. The mobile work zone will periodically pull over to allow congestion to clear.

Stafford County Work Zones

I-95 Northbound at Mile Marker 144-147
Tuesday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. Expect double lane closures on I-95 northbound passed the Exit 143/Garrisonville at mile marker 144 to 147 to allow crews to mill and pave this section of the interstate. Expect delays.

Route 626 (Potomac Run Road)
Tuesday, noon – 10 p.m. and Wednesday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. One-way, alternating traffic at Potomac Creek bridge for bridge repair work.

Route 637 (Telegraph Road) CLOSED
Telegraph Road is closed to through traffic at the I-95 overpass near Mt. Perry Road for pipe installation. Through traffic will be directed to use the designated detour around the work zone. Residents along Telegraph Road will maintain access to their homes.

Route 631 (Bells Hill Road) CLOSED
24-hour closure, Route 631 (Bells Hill Road) remains closed between Virginia Belle Drive and Belle Vine Lane for a slope failure and road damage caused by flooding. The road is anticipated to remain closed to through traffic until mid-September 2018. Road closed barricades and detour signs have been posted to guide motorists. Bells Hill Road remains open at both intersections with Route 1. Travelers seeking to access destinations south of Belle Vine Lane should use the southern intersection of Route 1 and Bells Hill Road to reach their destination.

Route 1406 (Shawnee Way)
Tuesday, noon – Friday evening. VDOT Area Headquarters maintenance crews will replace a drainage culvert on Shawnee Way. Residents will have access to homes and driveways at all times, but should follow detour route around road closure in work zone.

Spotsylvania County Work Zones

Route 3 Eastbound
Tuesday, noon – 6 p.m. and Wednesday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Single lane closure between the Orange County line and just east of the Elys Ford Road intersection. Crews will be applying pavement markings.

Caroline County Work Zones

Route 2 and Business Route 301 (Richmond Turnpike) at Rogers Clark Boulevard
Tuesday, 12 p.m. – 7 p.m. and Wednesday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Route 2 (Richmond Turnpike) and Business Route 301 near the Route 207 (Rogers Clark Boulevard) intersection to allow crews to install pavement markings. This will be mobile operation. Flaggers will direct drivers in the work zone. Expect brief delays.

Route 626 (Woodford Road)
Wednesday – Friday, 7 a.m. –5 p.m. Expect alternating, one-way traffic on Woodford Road near the bridge over the Mattaponi River for bridge repairs. Flaggers will direct drivers across the bridge. Expect brief delays near the bridge approaches and in the work zone.

Route 665 (Dodge City Road)
Tuesday, noon – 6 p.m. and Wednesday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. One-way, alternating traffic at Beverly Run bridge. Soil borings.

Caroline County/King George County Work Zone

Route 301 at Rappahannock River (James Madison Bridge)
Wednesday − Friday, 6:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane on Route 301 northbound and southbound near the James Madison Bridge over the Rappahannock River for a bridge maintenance project. Expect brief delays on the bridge and at the bridge approaches.

Gloucester County Work Zones

Route 17 Southbound near Coleman Bridge
Tuesday – Friday, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. Drivers should anticipate delays on Route 17 southbound near the Coleman Bridge as crews begin to mill and pave a section of roadway.

Route 17 Southbound
Tuesday – Thursday, 6 p.m. – 6 a.m. Crews will be milling and paving on Route 17 southbound near the following intersections: Route 1301 (Fields Landing Road), Route 667 (Earnest Lane), Route 614 (Hickory Fork Road) and Route 17 Business. Motorists may experience a rough driving surface and possible delays.

Route 605 (Indian Road) CLOSED
24-hour closure, Indian Road is closed between Fary’s Mill Road and Mohican Drive as crews for a pipe replacement project. Intense heavy rain damaged the triple-line pipe and roadway. Signs are posted along the recommended detour.

Surface Treatment
Wednesday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Expect single lane closures, with direction from a flagging crews, on various secondary routes throughout Gloucester County for surface treatment.

King William County Work Zones

Route 360 (Richmond Tappahannock Highway)
Tuesday, 12 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., Wednesday − Friday, 7 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. The bridge over the Moncuin Creek will be reduced to a single lane. Flaggers will alternate one-way traffic over the bridge to allow crews to work underneath the bridge. Expect brief delays.
