(Richmond)- State health officials are urging people to avoid parts of one Virginia Lake because of a harmful algae bloom. The Department of Health says algae that can cause skin rash and gastrointestinal illnesses was found in the Pamunkey and North Anna Branches of Lake Anna, between Charlottesville and Fredericksburg. Warm and sunny weather combined with high amounts of rainfall have made conditions favorable for algae growth. There must be two consecutive weeks of acceptable algae levels for the advisory to be lifted.
