Spotsy Scam: Treasurer’s Office Not Making Calls for Delinquent Taxes

spotsy-9

(Spotsylvania)- From Spotsylvania County: The Spotsylvania Treasurer’s Office received two complaints via telephone from citizens last week reporting they had received either an automated call or personal call with caller– claiming to be with the Treasurer’s Office—stating they owe taxes and requesting credit card information to bring their delinquent debts to good standing.

PLEASE NOTE: The Spotsylvania Treasurer’s Office does not make telephone calls regarding delinquent taxes. Citizens receive mailed notices when taxes are due and in the event taxes become past due.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, if a citizen receives one of these scam calls, they should make a note of a telephone number, if possible and simply hang up before calling the Sheriff’s Office to report the information. If a citizen has fallen victim to this scam and has lost money, they are advised to call the Sheriff’s Office during normal business hours at 540-507-7200 or the after hours non-emergency number 540-582-7115 to report the incident.
