Local Baseball Teams To Honor Robinson

jakie

Eight Fredericksburg area high school baseball teams will honor Jackie Robinson on Friday. The idea to pay tribute to the first black player in Major League Baseball comes from Stafford High School’s Omar Hanley. As part of a project for Commonwealth Governor’s School, Hanley raised over 3-thousand dollars. Players on Friday from all five Stafford high schools along with Caroline, James Monroe and Riverbend will all wear Robinson’s number 42. There will also be a pre-game ceremony. Hanley hopes this is done yearly in the area. Major League teams honored Robinson in the same way on Wednesday. Ultimately he says he hopes a conversation is started over the lack of diversity on too many baseball fields.
