City Council Agrees to Rename Bridge over I-95

FREDERICKSBURG – The Fredericksburg City Council on Tuesday agreed to name a bridge that crosses Interstate 95 for civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

To attach King’s name to the bridge, the council must forward a request to the Virginia Department of Transportation, which would take it to the Commonwealth Transportation Board for a decision because the bridge crosses a federal highway.

The bridge to be named for King is part of the two-year Fall Hill Avenue widening project that started earlier this month.

The roadway is being widened from two lanes to four. As part of that, the current bridge will be removed and a new four-lane bridge will be built.

That work will be done in stages so traffic will be able to continue traveling through the area.
