Stafford (WFVA) -- Ground has been broken and construction started on the route 17 widening project in Stafford. The project will add a third lane in each direction on 17 from I-95 to Stafford Lakes Parkway. At a groundbreaking, State Transportation Secretary Sean Connaughton said road money is about to increase substantially because of the roads bill passed by the General Assembly. Connaughton said about seven billion dollars in new money will be used for construction and maintenance in the next six year state-wide transportation plan. Stafford Supervisor Cord Sterling said more road money will help traffic flow around here and improve the state economy. The completion date for the route 17 work is projected to be December of 2016.
