(Stafford)- From VDOT:

River Road in Stafford County will remain closed with an extensive cleanup effort underway with the most recent flooding event. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) anticipates reopening the road early Thursday, June 28.

VDOT is partnering with Stafford County to remove large amounts of tree debris from the roadway, shoulders and ditches to make it passable as quickly as possible.

River Road is closed from Gordon Street to the entrance of Pratt Park. Drivers can still access the park on River Road from Route 3 (Kings Highway). Signs are posted to alert drivers to the road closure.

Although the water from the Rappahannock River has receded in many places, there are some areas where River Road is still covered with water. Once the water recedes and all debris is removed, VDOT will inspect the pavement to ensure it is safe for travel before reopening the road to traffic.

VDOT and other emergency responders remind motorists to never drive around barricades or through water flowing across a roadway.

At this time, River Road in Stafford County is the only roadway in the Fredericksburg area which remains closed after this weekend’s heavy rain and flooding.
