(Stafford)- VDOT HOT SPOTS IN THE FREDERICKSBURG DISTRICT July 31 – August 6, 2016

Stafford County

95 Express Lanes (North of Exit 143/Garrisonville Road)

Construction is underway on the 95 Express Lane Extension Project. Motorists should expect to see crews working in the median. Work includes the installation of temporary concrete barriers along the northbound and southbound shoulders on I-95 and tree clearing. Drivers should expect reduced inside shoulders in both directions and should watch for slow-moving construction vehicles entering and exiting the travel lanes. Work requiring lane closures will be performed during off-peak travel times.

Route 17

(Update) Three through travel lanes on Route 17 northbound and southbound between McLane Drive and Stafford Lakes Parkway are now open. Construction activities associated with the final phase of the Route 17 Widening Project will continue this week with minimal impact to traffic.

Route 610 (Garrisonville Road)

Monday – Thursday, 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. One lane will be closed intermittently on Route 610 eastbound and westbound at Onville Road. Motorists may periodically encounter brief delays during the overnight hours in this work zone. Crews are placing sewer lines in connection with the Route 610/Onville Road intersection improvement project.

Routine Maintenance

Monday – Thursday, 6 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and Friday, 6 a.m. – noon. Stay alert for mobile lane closures. Crews will be performing routine maintenance activities in the following locations:

Fall Hill Avenue at Fall Hill Office Park Entrance

(New) Beginning Wednesday, August 3 the entrance to Fall Hill Office Park located on Fall Hill Avenue will be converted to right turns only for traffic entering and exiting the office park. Left turns will be prohibited at this intersection. This new permanent traffic pattern at the entrance to the Fall Hill Office Park is in connection with the Fall Hill Avenue Improvement Project.

Fall Hill Avenue

Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – noon. Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures on Fall Hill Avenue between Carl D. Silver Parkway and the Rappahannock Canal for construction activity. Flaggers will direct motorists through the work zone.

Mary Washington Boulevard

Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – noon. Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures on Mary Washington Boulevard between Hospital Drive and Sam Perry Boulevard for construction activity. Flaggers will direct motorists through the work zone.

Spotsylvania County

Interstate 95

(New) Monday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Crews will inspect the I-95 bridge over Route 1 at mile marker 126 located at Exit 126 (Route 1/Spotsylvania). A single lane closure will be in place on I-95 southbound from 9 a.m. until noon followed by a single lane closure on I-95 northbound from noon until 3 p.m.

Route 627 (Gordon Road)

(New) Tuesday – Thursday, 7 p.m. – 5 a.m. Crews will be milling on Route 627 (Gordon Road) from

Route 628 (Smith Station Road) to just north of Route 674 (Chancellor Road). Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures and a rough driving surface in the work zone.

Route 628 (Smith Station Road)

Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Motorists should expect lane closures and delays on Route 628 southbound between the CVS entrance and Courtland High School. Flaggers will be directing traffic in the work zone. This work is in connection with the Route 628 (Smith Station Road) Turn Lanes and Signal Modification Project.

Harrison Road

Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – noon. Motorists should expect intermittent flagging and single lane closures on Route 620 (Harrison Road) for tree removal. Motorists may periodically encounter brief delays in the overnight hours in this work zone. This work is in connection with the Route 1 and Harrison Road Intersection Improvement Project.

Route 17

(New) Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Crews will perform trench work on Route 17 northbound and southbound from just north of Route 301 to just south of Route 675 (Hazelwood Lane). Motorists should expect alternating lane closures in the work zone.

Route 301 at Rappahannock River

(Update) On Wednesday crews will pour concrete in connection with the substructure repair on the Route 301 bridge over the Rappahannock River. Motorists will be restricted to one lane on the bridge and at the bridge approaches from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. This work is in connection with the Route 301 Bridge Rehabilitation Project.

King George County

Route 3

(Update) Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Crews will be milling and paving on Route 3 eastbound from the Stafford County line to just east of Route 665. Motorists will be restricted to one lane in the work zone.

Westmoreland County

Route 617 (Gardy’s Mill Road)

(New) On Monday, August 8, crews will begin work to replace the structurally deficient bridge on Route 617 (Gardy’s Mill Road). The timber deck bridge is located 1.5 miles from Route 202 near the Northumberland County line. During the bridge replacement project traffic on Route 617 will be detoured approximately 4.5 miles around the work site. The project is expected to be complete in approximately 3-4 weeks, weather permitting.

Route 3

(Update) Monday – Wednesday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Crews continue installing raised pavement markers on Route 3 eastbound from Route 623 (Finches Hill Road) to just west of Route 1209 (Forest Drive). Motorists should expect brief delays in this mobile work zone.

Route 204

(Update) Monday – Wednesday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Crews will be installing raised pavement markers on Route 204 near Route 3 (Kings Highway). Motorists should expect brief delays in this mobile work zone.

Route 202

(Update) Monday – Wednesday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Crews will be installing raised pavement markers on Route 202 from just west of Route 662 (east end of the Nomini Bridge) to just east of Route 621 (Prospect Hill Road). Motorists should expect brief delays in this mobile work zone.

(Update) Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Crews will be patching on Route 214 between Route 3 and Route 609 (Stratford Hall Road). Crews should expect brief delays in the work zone.

Downing Bridge Cleaning

(New) Monday – Thursday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Motorists will be restricted to one lane on the Downing Bridge located on Route 360 between Essex and Richmond counties this week. Crews will be performing routine bridge cleaning.

Route 17 Northbound

(Update) Wednesday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Crews will be line striping on Route 17 northbound from the north end of Piscataway Creek Bridge to Route 360 at Brays Fork. Motorists should expect brief delays in this mobile work zone.

Route 17 Northbound

(Update) Monday – Friday, 7 p.m. – 6 a.m. Crews will continue milling, paving, installing traffic loops and line striping on Route 17 northbound from Route 360 at Bray’s Fork to just north of Route 725 (Winston Road). Motorists should expect a rough driving surface and brief delays in the work zone.

Route 30

(Update) Thursday, August 4 – Friday, August 5 and Monday, August 8 – Friday, August 12, 7 a.m. –

7 p.m. Crews will be milling, patching and paving on Route 30 from Route 620 (Black Gum Road) to Route 641 (Sandy Point Road). Motorists should expect brief delays and a rough driving surface in the work zone.

(Update) Tuesday, August 9 – Wednesday, August 10, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Crews will be milling on Route 30 from Route 631 (Marl Hill Road) to Route 632 (Mt. Olive Cohoke Road). Motorists should expect brief delays and a rough driving surface in the work zone.

Route 14

(Update) Wednesday, August 3 – Friday, August 5 and Monday, August 8, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Crews will be removing existing pavement markings and reflective pavement markers then patching on Route 14 from Route 611 (Tabernacle Road) to just east of Route 729 (Weston Hall Road). Motorists should expect brief delays in the work zone.

(Update) Friday, August 5 and Monday, August 8 – Wednesday, August 10, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Crews will be removing pavement markings and patching on Route 198 from just east of Route 1015 (Cross Court) to Route 633 (Fitchetts Wharf Road). Motorists should expect brief delays in the work zone.

Gloucester County

Route 614

(Update) Thursday, August 4 – Friday, August 5 and Monday August 8 – Wednesday, August 10, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Crews will be paving and line striping on Route 614 from Route 606 (Ark Road) to Route 610 (Pinetta Road). Motorists should expect delays in the work zone.

City of Fredericksburg

Fall Hill Avenue Widening and I-95 Overpass Replacement Project

Construction is underway on the Fall Hill Avenue widening and I-95 overpass replacement project. Motorists should expect lane closures and brief delays on Fall Hill Avenue between the Rappahannock Canal bridge and Carl D. Silver Parkway (Central Park), as well as on Mary Washington Boulevard. The project will be completed in January 2017.

Stafford County

95 Express Lanes Southern Terminus (North of Exit 143/Garrisonville Road)

Construction is underway on the project to extend 95 Express Lanes in Stafford County. The approximate 2.5 mile extension will carry traffic beyond the flyover ramp where 95 Express Lanes currently end, just north of Exit 143 at Route 610 (Garrisonville Road). When the project is complete, northbound traffic in the main lanes will be able to enter 95 Express Lanes earlier at a new left entrance south of the Garrisonville Road overpass. The existing left entrance north of Garrisonville Road will remain. Southbound Express Lanes traffic heading to the Fredericksburg area and south will be able to continue past Garrisonville and merge about one mile south of Garrisonville Road. The southbound ramp is scheduled to open by early 2018, and the northbound ramp will open in summer 2018.

Route 610/Onville Road Intersection Improvement Project

Construction is underway at the intersection of Route 610 (Garrisonville Road) and Route 641 (Onville Road) to build additional turn lanes. Traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction on Onville Road. The project will be completed in May 2017.

Route 17

Construction is underway to widen Route 17 from four to six lanes between McLane Drive and Stafford Lakes Parkway, a distance of nearly 2 miles. The work zone extends from just south of the I-95 interchange to Cardinal Forest Drive. Travel lanes will remain open, but motorists may encounter slight traffic shifts in the work zone. This project will be completed by December 2016.

Route 1

(Update) Be alert for a temporary traffic pattern on Route 1 southbound at the site of the new Aquia Hilton. The through lanes on Route 1 southbound from just south of Port Aquia Drive to just prior to the intersection of Route 1 and Coachman Drive (at the 7-Eleven) will be shifted to the left. The continuous center lane for left turns in this area will be closed to accommodate the traffic shift. This work is related to construction of the Aquia Hilton. This temporary traffic pattern has been extended.

Route 1 and Garrisonville Road Turn Lane Project

Stafford County is locally administering a project to add a second right turn lane from Route 1 southbound to westbound Route 610 (Garrisonville Road). The project seeks to reduce congestion and driver delay on Route 1 southbound. New traffic signal equipment will also be installed at the intersection. Construction will begin in July and conclude in September 2016. Drivers may encounter lane closures during off-peak and overnight hours.

Spotsylvania County

Spotsylvania Avenue and Mine Road Intersection Improvement Project.

Construction is underway at the intersection of Spotsylvania Avenue and Mine Road Intersection Improvement Project. Crews will be adding turn lanes, adjusting the existing traffic signal renovating the sidewalk and median on Spotsylvania Avenue. Motorists should expect brief delays during the daytime hours. Extended lane closures will take place during the overnight hours. Motorists should expect periodic delays on Mine Road at the intersection. Construction is expected to be complete by mid-November.

Route 1 and Route 620 (Harrison Road)

Construction to build additional turn lanes and extend existing turn lanes is underway at the intersection of Route 1 and Harrison Road in Spotsylvania County. Motorists should be alert for construction crews and equipment. The project is scheduled to be completed in May 2018.

Route 628 (Smith Station Road)

Construction is underway on the Route 628 (Smith Station Road) Turn Lanes and Signal Modification Project. The project is located on Smith Station Road near the Route 208 (Courthouse Road) intersection. Motorists should expect periodic lane closures and delays in the work zone.

Caroline County

Route 722 (Nelson Hill Road)

Nelson Hill Road is closed to traffic at the bridge over the Mattaponi River for a bridge rehabilitation project. Motorists should follow the posted detour route. Estimated completion is mid-September 2016.

Caroline County/King George County

Route 301 at Rappahannock River

Bridge rehabilitation is underway on the James Madison Memorial Bridge over the Rappahannock River. Maintenance will occur below the bridge deck and includes repairing concrete, replacing bearings, shoring up rip-rap on the slope, and replacing navigation lights. All lanes are currently open on the bridge, but single lane closures will be installed in the future. Project completion is October 2017.
