(Fredericksburg)- Alert: Many Credit/Debit Cards Used at Wal-Mart in Central Park Earlier this Year Have Been Compromised

Fredericksburg detectives are investigating a large number of complaints in which individuals have reported their debit/credit card numbers have been compromised. Detectives believe the suspects are obtaining debit/credit card numbers by placing overlay devices on credit card readers at checkout counters. Today, Fredericksburg detectives received information from Wal-Mart Global Investigations that debit/credit cards used at the Central Park Wal-Mart have been compromised.

The Fredericksburg incidents appear to have possibly occurred earlier this year in March and April. The exact register(s) where the overlay device(s) were placed onto the debit/credit card readers have not yet been identified.

A credit union in the Fredericksburg area has reported 37 of their members are victims where their debit cards were used at ATM’s to make large cash withdrawals. The Central Park Wal-Mart has been identified as the place where their members’ debit card numbers/pins were obtained. Nearly all of the “known” victims had large ATM withdrawals made using their debit card numbers.

If you have used your debit/credit cards at the Fredericksburg Wal-Mart during March and April of this year, we urge you to contact your financial institution(s) and have a new card issued.
